Healing Begins in the Mind and the Body

Somatic Therapy in Chicago and Western Suburbs

Stress, trauma, and overwhelming life experiences affect more than our thoughts—they also live in our bodies. Even when we understand an experience intellectually, our nervous system may continue responding as though danger is still present. This can lead to chronic tension, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, difficulty relaxing, sleep problems, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others.

At Grace Integrated, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed Somatic Therapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families throughout Chicago and the western suburbs. Somatic therapy recognizes the powerful connection between the mind and body, helping individuals understand and regulate their nervous system while gently processing experiences that may be contributing to emotional distress.

Overview

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to mental health treatment that recognizes the close relationship between the brain, body, emotions, and nervous system. The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body.”

Rather than focusing solely on talking about problems, somatic therapy helps you notice how emotions, stress, and trauma are experienced physically. Through increased awareness, practical regulation skills, and body-based interventions, many clients experience greater calm, emotional resilience, and a renewed sense of safety.

Whether you are living with trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, grief, or simply feel disconnected from your body, somatic therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and move toward lasting healing.

This may contribute to symptoms such as:

  • Chronic anxiety
  • Hypervigilance
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Persistent stress responses
  • Panic attacks
  • Feeling disconnected from your body
  • Emotional numbness

When we experience stress or trauma, our nervous system automatically responds to help us survive. In many cases, the body naturally returns to a state of balance once the threat has passed. However, overwhelming or prolonged stress can leave the nervous system “stuck” in survival mode.

At Grace Integrated, somatic therapy is often integrated with other evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and trauma-focused therapies to create a personalized treatment plan.

Somatic therapy helps individuals recognize these physical patterns while learning ways to regulate the nervous system and restore a greater sense of safety.

Is this the right time?

Signs You May Benefit From Somatic Therapy

Many people experiencing chronic stress or trauma notice that their bodies react before their minds have time to process what is happening.

You may benefit from somatic therapy if you:

Feel constantly tense or "on edge"
Experience chronic anxiety or panic attacks
Notice your body reacting strongly to stressful situations
Have difficulty relaxing, even when you are safe
Experience chronic muscle tension or headaches related to stress
Feel emotionally numb or disconnected
Struggle with trauma or PTSD symptoms
Have difficulty identifying or expressing emotions
Experience frequent overwhelm
Feel stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses
Experience burnout or chronic stress
Have difficulty sleeping due to stress or anxiety
Feel disconnected from your body or physical sensations
Have tried talk therapy but continue feeling physically activated by past experiences
Somatic therapy can be especially helpful for individuals whose symptoms seem to persist even after they understand their experiences intellectually.

Treatment Options

What Somatic Therapy Can Help Treat

Somatic therapy is beneficial for a wide range of mental health concerns because it focuses on regulating the nervous system while supporting emotional healing.
01

Trauma and PTSD

Helping the body safely process traumatic experiences while reducing hypervigilance, emotional reactivity, and nervous system dysregulation.
02

Complex Trauma

Supporting healing from prolonged childhood trauma, emotional neglect, attachment wounds, or repeated adverse experiences.
03

Anxiety Disorders

Reducing chronic worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and persistent nervous system activation.
04

Chronic Stress and Burnout

Helping individuals recover from prolonged stress while improving resilience, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
05

Grief and Loss

Supporting individuals experiencing both the emotional and physical impact of significant loss.
06

Depression

Helping reconnect individuals with their emotions, physical awareness, motivation, and daily functioning.
07

Medical Trauma and Chronic Health Conditions

Supporting individuals coping with difficult medical experiences, chronic illness, or persistent pain while addressing the emotional effects on the nervous system.
08

Relationship and Attachment Challenges

Helping individuals recognize body-based responses within relationships, strengthen emotional awareness, and develop healthier patterns of connection.

Because the nervous system influences nearly every aspect of emotional health, somatic therapy can complement treatment for many concerns beyond trauma alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is somatic therapy only for trauma?

No. While somatic therapy is commonly used to treat trauma and PTSD, it can also help individuals experiencing anxiety, chronic stress, burnout, grief, depression, relationship difficulties, and nervous system dysregulation.

Will I have to do physical exercises?

Not necessarily. Somatic therapy is tailored to each individual. Some sessions involve mindfulness, breathing, grounding, or noticing body sensations, while others may include gentle movement if appropriate and comfortable.

Is somatic therapy the same as massage or physical therapy?

No. Somatic therapy is a form of psychotherapy provided by trained mental health professionals. While it involves awareness of the body, its focus is on emotional healing, nervous system regulation, and psychological well-being.

Can somatic therapy be combined with other therapies?

Yes. Somatic therapy is often integrated with EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches to create a personalized treatment plan.

How long does somatic therapy take?

Treatment varies depending on your goals, history, and symptoms. Some clients benefit from short-term support, while others engage in longer-term therapy to address more complex concerns.
