Find Healing by Understanding Every Part of Yourself
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Chicago and Western Suburbs
At Grace Integrated, we offer Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families throughout Chicago and the western suburbs. IFS is a compassionate, evidence-based approach that helps individuals understand the different “parts” of themselves with curiosity rather than judgment. Instead of trying to eliminate difficult emotions or behaviors, IFS helps uncover the protective purpose behind them and promotes healing from the inside out.

Overview
What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Whether you’re feeling stuck in recurring patterns, struggling with overwhelming emotions, or wanting to better understand yourself, IFS offers a path toward healing that begins with acceptance rather than self-criticism.
According to IFS, every person has a core Self—a calm, compassionate, confident, and wise inner presence. When life becomes overwhelming, different parts step in to protect us from emotional pain. Although these protective strategies were often helpful at one time, they can sometimes create challenges later in life.
IFS generally describes three categories of parts:
Managers
Managers work to prevent emotional pain before it happens. They may strive for perfection, seek control, avoid conflict, overachieve, or constantly worry in an effort to keep you safe.
Firefighters
Firefighters respond when emotional pain becomes overwhelming. They often seek immediate relief through behaviors such as emotional withdrawal, impulsivity, overeating, substance use, anger, excessive screen time, or other coping strategies.
Exiles
Exiles carry the emotional wounds from difficult life experiences, including trauma, rejection, shame, grief, or fear. Because these feelings can be overwhelming, other parts often work hard to keep them hidden.

questions & answered
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "parts" mean in IFS therapy?
In IFS, “parts” refer to the different thoughts, emotions, roles, or coping strategies we all naturally develop throughout life. Everyone has parts, and having them is considered a normal aspect of human psychology.
Is IFS only for trauma?
No. While IFS is highly effective for trauma recovery, it is also used to treat anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, self-esteem challenges, grief, perfectionism, and many other emotional difficulties.
Will I lose control during IFS therapy?
No. IFS is a collaborative therapy where you remain fully aware and engaged throughout the process. Your therapist helps you safely explore your experiences at a pace that feels comfortable.
Can IFS be combined with other therapies?
Yes. Internal Family Systems is often integrated with EMDR, Somatic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches depending on your needs.
How long does IFS therapy take?
Treatment length varies depending on your goals, life experiences, and the concerns you are addressing. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy, while others choose longer-term work to deepen healing and personal growth.
