Navigating Life After Loss

Grief & Loss Therapy in Chicago and Western Suburbs

Grief is one of the most profound and universal human experiences, yet it can also feel deeply isolating. Loss can bring sadness, numbness, anger, guilt, confusion, and even moments of relief or disbelief. There is no “right” way to grieve, and no set timeline for healing.

At Grace Integrated, we provide compassionate, evidence-based grief and loss therapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families throughout Chicago and the western suburbs. We understand that grief is not something to “get over,” but something to move through with support, meaning, and care.

Overview

What Is Grief ?

Grief is the emotional, psychological, and physical response to loss. While it is most often associated with death, grief can also occur after any significant change or ending.

Grief is not linear. It often comes in waves and can shift over time, sometimes unexpectedly. Everyone experiences grief differently based on personality, relationship, circumstances, and support systems.

Grief is a natural response to love and attachment it reflects the significance of what has been lost.

Loss can include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Loss of a partner or relationship
  • Divorce or separation
  • Miscarriage or infertility struggles
  • Major life transitions or relocations
  • Loss of health or chronic illness diagnosis
  • Loss of identity or role (career changes, retirement, parenting transitions)
  • Estrangement from family or loved ones
  • Loss of a pet

Treatment Options

Understanding Different Types of Grief

Grief does not look the same for everyone. Understanding different patterns of grief can help normalize your experience.

Normal (Uncomplicated) Grief
A natural response to loss that gradually becomes more manageable over time, though sadness may still come and go.
Disenfranchised Grief
Grief that is not always socially recognized or supported, such as miscarriage, pet loss, or estranged relationships.
Complicated Grief
Grief that remains intense and persistent over time, making it difficult to resume daily functioning or find meaning after loss.
Traumatic Grief
Grief that is complicated by sudden, violent, or unexpected death, often overlapping with trauma responses.
Anticipatory Grief
Grief that begins before an expected loss, such as during terminal illness or progressive decline of a loved one.

questions & answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Is grief therapy only for recent loss?

No. People seek grief therapy months or even years after a loss, especially when grief feels unresolved or continues to impact daily life.

Will therapy make me stop grieving?

No. The goal is not to eliminate grief, but to help you process it in a way that feels more manageable and less overwhelming.

Is it normal for grief to come and go?

Yes. Grief often comes in waves and can be triggered unexpectedly, even long after the loss.

What if I can’t stop crying or feel numb instead?

Both are common grief responses. Therapy helps you understand and work with your emotional experience without judgment.

Can grief turn into depression?

Yes. For some people, prolonged or intense grief can overlap with or develop into depression, which therapy can also help address.
